Elwood-John H. Glenn High School student Patrick Heffron was recently chosen for the New York State Education Department’s Youth Advisory Panel, which serves to advise the Office of Special Education regarding proposed policies related to the education of students with disabilities.
The Youth Advisory Panel, a group of 10-15 high school students from across the state who are currently receiving special education services through an individualized education program, meets virtually three times per year via Zoom. The panelists, who are appointed for a two-year term, engage in discussions with NYSED staff on policy issues, commenting on and providing their recommendations regarding proposed and future policies. The students’ participation provides NYSED with a first-hand perspective on ways to improve the quality of special education services, while panel participation offers the students opportunities to enhance their leadership skills and self-advocacy.
