The entire Elwood community celebrated a perfect homecoming together on a sunny Oct. 19 morning, marching in the traditional parade from James H. Boyd Intermediate School to the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School entrance. The participants included the high school and middle school band, cheerleaders and kickline, as well as fun floats from each high school grade, including themes from the seniors (Elmo), the contest-winning juniors (SpongeBob SquarePants), sophomores (The Lorax) and freshmen (Shrek). The community then enjoyed a fun-filled carnival while awaiting the big football game.

The festivities had begun a day earlier on Oct. 18 with an amazing pep rally in the afternoon. That evening, approximately 400 students gathered at the high school gymnasium for the homecoming dance, which featured the crowning of Homecoming King Davin Li and Homecoming Queen Christina Munch.

On homecoming afternoon, the hyped-up Glenn football team took on Mount Sinai High School. While the visiting Mustangs got on the scoreboard first, the Knights wasted no time in answering back with a touchdown and taking control of the contest, which ended in a satisfying 41-23 victory for Elwood. All-State running back KaRahn King rushed for 164 yards, scoring four touchdowns; quarterback Cole Madden completed 12 of 14 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns; Joe Competiello earned 250 all-purpose yards and a touchdown, along with 10 tackles and a big interception on defense; Keith King rushed for 52 yards; Ethan Levy caught a pass for a touchdown; and Joe LaMay and Luca Palisciano each notched a sack on Mount Sinai. Throughout the game and during the halftime show, the John Glenn Marching Knights band and the school’s cheerleaders and kickline entertained and energized the audience.

“The John Glenn air was filled with enthusiasm, energy and excitement like we have never seen before,” Principal Corey McNamara said. “We credit this to our very spirited senior class, their leadership by example and their advocacy for Elwood pride.”

“Homecoming 2024 was an exceptional week filled with Elwood pride,” Athletic Director Dave Shanahan said. “Each school day featured spirited themes, and our John Glenn students embraced the week with positivity, culminating in one of the best pep rallies in recent memory. On homecoming day, our football team delivered a thrilling victory, cheered on by a capacity crowd. It truly was a great day to be a Knight!”
