The mission of the Elwood Public Schools Special Education Department is to provide services to students with disabilities ages 3-21. All services are designed to support student success by creating full educational access opportunities with appropriate accommodations as may be necessary. We maintain educational equity for all students with disabilities and foster personal growth and development so as to enable our students to reach their full potential. Our primary goal is to prepare each special education student to ultimately work and live independently, and lead self-directed lives upon graduation.

Special Education Programs and Services Focused Review

The New York State Education Department's Office of Special Education has completed a Special Education Programs and Services Focused Review in the Elwood Union Free School District during the 2016-17 school year.

This review examined the district's compliance with selected federal and State laws and regulations governing the education of students with disabilities. The review was conducted by the Special Education Quality Assurance (SEQA) Long Island Regional Office. The review process involved a review of school records of a representative sample of students with disabilities, classroom visitations, interviews of parents and staff surveys. Meetings of the committee on special education were also observed.

A copy of the report may be reviewed by contacting Mrs. Wilkinson, Executive Director of Special Education at 631-266-5400 x1437.
