Elwood-John H. Glenn High School welcomed 57 new members to the National Honor Society in an induction ceremony in front of their proud families, held in the school’s Performing Arts Center on the evening of April 1. Class of 2021 alumna Brynn Geard delivered the keynote speech; other speakers included NHS adviser Diane Locascio, Principal Corey McNamara and Superintendent Dr. Gayle Steele. A gorgeous musical intermission was provided by the Elwood-John H. Glenn Chamber Strings, performing selections by Handel and Tchaikovsky.

“All of you are here tonight because of your demonstration of excellence and scholarship, service, character and leadership,” NHS President Azn Pineda said. “Being inducted into the National Honor Society is not just a recognition of academic achievement, but is a call to transformational leadership – a commitment to use your talents to serve others, and the responsibility to uphold the values that you all have brought here today.”

“You should all be very proud of your hard work and the sheer dedication it took to get here,” said NHS Vice President Victoria Weissberg speaking on the NHS pillar of scholarship. “Throughout my years at John Glenn, inside and outside of the classroom, I came to learn that scholarship is more than a number. It’s more than recognition. It is a mindset, a lifelong pursuit of knowledge, and within that pursuit, the opportunity to learn and grow and to exemplify the excellence which you have all demonstrated to get to this point. Scholarship is not just about grades or achievements, but about the curiosity that drives us to explore, question and push ourselves beyond our limits.”

“As students, we often hear that we are the future, but through service, we prove that we are also the present,” said NHS Secretary Caroline Weiss, speaking on the NHS pillar of service. “As members of this honor society, you’ll be called to lead, not just in academics, but in action. You all have the ability, the responsibility and the opportunity to make a difference. Let yourselves embrace that challenge, not just because you have to, but because you can. Looking at the future of John Glenn’s National Honor Society, I see great readiness, and that is because of each and every one of you and your dedication to greatness.”

“Character is doing the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing,” said NHS Treasurer Katherine Moravec, speaking on the NHS pillar of character. “Now that you’ve earned your rightful spot in the National Honor Society, continue to demonstrate to people what character truly is. Show off the values that make you, you, and in turn, that make you eligible to join this program. Continue to stay dedicated to what you enjoy and to making John Glenn a better place.”
