EMS Fate Club Takes Educational Tour of School and District Offices

EMS Fate Club students touring the building thumbnail264203

During the month of January, Elwood Middle School’s Future Administrators and Teachers of Elwood, known as the FATE Club, took two terrific field trips. They explored an unfamiliar environment, met influential people and had a lot of fun. There’s only one catch – they didn’t have to leave the building.

FATE is made up of EMS students exploring careers in education. Led by teachers Elle Chan and Christopher Vandernoth, these intrepid future educators have been researching and learning about the many different folks that keep the school running.

As part of their learning, the students were able to take a Jan. 21 tour of what they call the “Secret Hallway” – the District Office where Elwood’s administrators are located – guided by Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services Kelly Gorman. Students visited the offices for business, curriculum, human resources, special education and technology, met with assistant superintendents and directors, and learned about those administrators’ roles and responsibilities. The FATE Club students were able to ask lots of questions, explore previously unknown careers, and learn about all the tasks and people needed to provide them with an education.

A week later, this brilliant bunch had the opportunity to visit with Assistant Principal Julie Bilello and Principal Dr. Christina Moran. These building leaders answered several great questions prepared by the students. These included more serious questions about how and why they chose to become administrators, as well as fun ones such as “Are you a dog person or a cat person?” The visit was a great opportunity for the FATE Club students to learn about their school, their options for the future and the people behind the decisions that impact them on a daily basis.

“Everyone had a wonderful time, and the whole FATE Club would like to thank each of the district staff members and administrators for their time and the warm welcome into their offices,” Vandernoth said. “We are so proud of our future educators, and are looking forward to continuing our learning as they plan lessons and start their own teaching experiences in the remaining months of school.”
