Elwood-John H. Glenn High School

A Message From the Principal

August 2018

Dear John H. Glenn Students and Parents:

I hope everyone has enjoyed summer vacation and that the past weeks have afforded you time to spend with family and friends. As these last warm days of summer draw to a close, our Assistant Principals Mr. Leroy Cole, Mr. Corey McNamara and I are excited to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year.

John H. Glenn High School offers tremendous opportunities for our students both inside and outside the classroom. During the 2017-2018 school year, more students challenged themselves by taking Advanced Placement Courses than in previous years, thus earning college credits at a most impressive rate. Further, our students continued to outperform others, statewide, on the New York State Regent Exams. Many members of the Class of 2018 graduated with the honored status of Summa, Magna or Cum Laude distinction. Our graduates continue to achieve acceptance into highly competitive and prestigious institutions of higher learning thus, they leave John H. Glenn ready to successfully tackle post-secondary endeavors.

Our student’s accomplishments are a tremendous source of pride for the Elwood community and we recognize that their success is a direct reflection of the commitment of the entire Elwood community including members of the John Glenn faculty and staff who work collaboratively to promote excellence for every student. As a result, our collective work has earned us the outstanding recognition by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association as a Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction. We have also earned the tremendous distinction of inclusion on the College Board’s Advanced Placement District Honor Roll and proudly we have been identified as a finalist for the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Clearly, we have much to celebrate!

The 2018-2019 school year will also bring new and exciting opportunities for our students. This year, John H. Glenn High School will continue the 1:1 initiative as we provide each ninth grade student with a Chromebook computer. Our curriculum guide, located on the JGHS website, has been updated to include the offering of AP Research as part of the AP Capstone Program, Dual Enrollment College Level Courses and other robust course offerings. The John Glenn faculty are prepared to meet the needs of these exciting educational enhancements; I am confident that our students will continue to impress via their accomplishments this coming year.

As faculty and staff prepare for another outstanding educational year, our vision statement will continue to serve as our guide: “We pride ourselves on working together to ensure that all students are provided with a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment. Our curriculum is designed to spark intellectual curiosity, develop critical thinking, promote the ability to work collaboratively with respect and compassion for one another. We foster self-confidence, integrity and an industrious spirit in our students so that they will reach their true potential, become lifelong learners and engaged citizens in an ever changing interdependent global community.”

This vision statement is reflective of the collaborative relationship between home and school that the faculty, staff and administrators at John Glenn High School Community deeply value as a critical component of our students’ success. It continues to be an honor and privilege to work with a dedicated and caring community that is so invested in this charge. I am confident that, together, we will continue to promote excellence for all the students of the Elwood-John H. Glenn Community.

High school years can be an exciting yet sometimes stressful time for both child and parent. Please know that we are here to support our students and families, throughout their years at Glenn. To keep abreast of the exciting events and achievements of John H. Glenn High School, I invite you to follow me on twitter at Mrs. B@JGHS As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns that may arise throughout the year.

On behalf of myself, the high school administration, faculty and staff, welcome back to another exciting school year!
