Elwood-John H. Glenn High School

A Message From the Principal

Dear John H. Glenn Students and Parents:

I hope everyone has enjoyed summer vacation and that the past weeks have proven to be enjoyable and fulfilling for one and all.  As these last warm days of summer draw to a close, our Assistant Principals Mr. Cole, Mr. Colletti and I are excited to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year.
The John H. Glenn High School students will continue to have opportunities to follow in our traditions of excellence both inside and outside the classroom. During the school year ended in June 2017, more students challenged themselves by taking Advanced Placement Courses than in any previous years, thus earning college credits at a most impressive rate.  Further, our students continued to outperform others, statewide, on New York State Regent Exams with many members of the Class of 2017 graduating with the honored status of Summa, Magna or Cum Laude distinctions.  It is also noteworthy to highlight the impressive rates at which our graduates continued to achieve acceptance into highly competitive, prestigious institutions of higher learning positioning themselves to leave John H. Glenn ready to successfully tackle post-secondary endeavors.

The success of our students is a direct reflection of the commitment of the entire Elwood community including members of the John Glenn faculty and staff who work collaboratively to promote excellence for each and every student.  As a result, our collective work has earned us the outstanding recognition of being a New York State Rewards School of Excellence and the tremendous distinction of inclusion on The College Board’s Advanced Placement District Honor Roll.

The 2017-2018 school year will also bring new and exciting opportunities for our students.  This year, John H. Glenn High School will continue the 1:1 initiative as we provide each ninth grade student with a Chromebook computer.  Our curriculum guide, located on the JGHS website, has been updated to include the offering of the AP Capstone Program, Seal of Biliteracy and other robust course offerings. The John Glenn faculty has prepared well to meet the needs of these exciting educational enhancements; I am confident that our students will continue to impress via their accomplishments this coming year.

As faculty and staff prepare for another outstanding educational year, our newly adopted vision statement as crafted by the JGHS faculty and members of the Shared Decision Making Team will serve as our guide:  “We pride ourselves on working together to ensure that all students are provided with a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment. Our curriculum is designed to spark intellectual curiosity, develop critical thinking, promote the ability to work collaboratively with respect and compassion for one another. We foster self-confidence, integrity and an industrious spirit in our students so that they will reach their true potential, become lifelong learners and engaged citizens in an ever changing interdependent global community.”

This vision statement is reflective of the Elwood School District theme for the 2017-2018 school year of "Teaching the Whole Child."  It continues to be an honor and privilege to work with the dedicated, caring community that is so invested in this charge.  I am confident that, together, we will continue to promote excellence for all the students of the Elwood-John H. Glenn Community.

High school years can be an exciting yet sometimes stressful time for both child and parent. Please know that we are here to support our students, as well as their families, throughout their years at Glenn. To keep abreast of the enthusiasm and achievements that students of John Glenn High School are sure to experience in the upcoming years, I invite you to follow me on twitter @BurzynskiMrs.  As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns that may arise throughout the year.

On behalf of our administration, faculty and staff, I welcome you to a school year that will surely prove to be yet another tremendous experience for one and all!

Sincerely,

Carisa Burzynski
Principal
